Personal Bubble
The spines in this painting are rolled paper coated in gesso prior to the application oil paint. When the porcupine pufferfish perceives a serious threat, the fish opens its mouth to quickly swallow enough water to bloat its body into a ball several times its normal size, also causing its spines to protrude.
